Webster's definition

Steph's definition
n 1: a desired outcome or future state that can be used to guide current choices, ideally created in one's mind with the help of one's intuition, unfettered by constraints related to figuring out its practicality or how it can be attained

In 2002 or 2003, I penned a Vision of where I wanted to be in the next five years: living in the country happily married to my husband, working out of my home surrounded by colourful, bountiful gardens, operating an artist's studio built out of straw bales and stucco. Now approaching the five-year mark, I live in an apartment downtown, work in a cubicle for the government, and am about to start a process to divorce said husband. Hm.

I'm a little gun-shy of penning another 5-year Vision, but I still think it's important. I believe that having a clear Vision of where I'd like to be, combined with discipline and an openness to what the Universe has to offer me, will enhance my chances of making it real.

My sabbatical has come and gone. I'm back to work. I'm on the cusp of divorce and slowly letting go of the past. I'm nurturing wonderful new relationships with friends and loved ones. Maybe it's time to release all constraints and imagine myself at my best, five years from now. Maybe it's time to put pen to paper again and embrace what could be.

Another thought... Perhaps rather than lose sight of that Vision completely, you could simply adjust your timeline? :-) Remember in Under the Tuscan Sun? Her Vision came true, just not in the specific way she thought it would.

Good for you for even taking the time to do this; most of us don't.

Vivere in pace,

What a lovely perspective, jag. Be open to wherever your journey brings you, Steph. And celebrate the fact that you have the desire to be introspective and curious. : )

I've always thought its easier to get to a specific destination if you know where it is you want to go in the first place.

On the whole I think its a good idea to have a vision of where you'd like to be in 1,3,5, 10 years if only so you can effect changes to make it happen. In my mind that is the difference between living life vs. letting life happen to you.

Then again I am also arrogant enough to believe I am the master of my own destiny, Universe or God be damned! ;-)

What great, thought-provoking comments! Thank you all.

Perhaps the key to a solid Vision is to create it with intent, but refrain from casting it in stone; treat it as a guide to move forward, but remain open to re-visiting it when life's little (or big) detours come our way.

Easier said than done. ;)
